Executive coaching - why coach management teams?

Many of the managers in the companies I work for have the problem that they all are very busy and often don’t have time to meet. This lack of communication fosters a lack of coordination and subsequently arguments and in some cases lack of trust between managers. This is not only damaging the company, but has a stressful effect on the individual manager. Top management must work as a group - a group that should be functioning as one coherent team. In some of these cases, often when it has become very serious, I am called in and asked what to do. There is never one simple answer. In some cases where trust has been broken I suggest coaching of the entire top management group.

Each month I have one or two coaching meetings with each of the managers and once or twice a month I sit in on their planning meeting. In this way we often re-establish previously held and necessary top management meetings. Sitting in on the meetings I have the opportunity to observe everyone, their reactions and ways of communicating. This makes it possible for me to help, not only the individual manager, but also the managers to again become a team that work together and support each other. The strange thing about this is that it is always the companies with the best leadership that see coaching as a possibility. Weak leaders are afraid to admit they have a problem. They are also afraid that they might be discloses and it become even more obvious how weak and poor leaders they are. But coaching is not about putting people down, no matter how poor leaders they might be. The aim is to help everyone that needs help to live up to their full potential.
