How to grow younger with age
In my broadcast on TV2 Lorry in Denmark and in more than 20 Danish newspapers, I have explained how and why companies can benefit from employing fresh and energetic senior employees a little longer instead of sending them off on pension. To keep these employees requires that the elderly want to stay longer on the job and that they stay fresh both physically and mentally. Older employees have a knowledge and a network of contacts, which will take a new employee a very long time to build to the same degree. There is money to be saved. Older workers need not work full time or in exactly the same position, but can advantageously be employed as mentors, consultants or advisors. When we speak of corporate governance it also means taking care and being considerate of your employees. Many older employees have a desire to continue working for a longer period. This may be due to many factors. By retaining the job there is still something to get up to in the morning. To feel valued and retain status as a respected and needed individual are just a few of the factors that come into play. As one of our female acquaintances said when we last were together - "I simply do not know what to do when my husband if he is going to go home all day." And it is far from all who know what they will do with themselves not having to work any more. This is where I believe that all companies and organizations have a responsibility for the third age becomes a positive experience for the employee.
